 C O N C E P T:

To follow on from my research into Sally Mann and Sarah Ellen Mark, I will carry out another photo shoot taking inspiration from both photographers. I intend to capture the ideas of the influences parents have on their children and how it cannot always be for the best. Within this, the subjects I am focusing on particularly are smoking and crime, and how often these 'habits' can be passed down through generations. The purpose of this photo shoot is not just to capture feelings, but also to tell a story and capture the character that many see within young individuals today.

M O D E L S:

As I have focused a lot on capturing photographs of much younger models working more in the style of Mann. Therefore, to work in the style of Mark I plan to use a slightly older model of a different gender. This will allow me to explore a range of effects and subjects within my photography to come about the best come. Although the model this time round will be older and therefore maybe not influences on young children as such, in the end this shoot could represent how influence from being a young child can follow you to your teens and physically take hold. Instead of playing games this time round it is for real.

L O C A T I O N:

To work more in the style of Mark, I will set my photo shoot in an abounded area with very harsh backgrounds where these bad habits such as smoking and drinking already take place by others to make my shoot more realistic. For safety reasons, I will have to take caution when taking photographs in rough locations. As for viewpoints, I would like to keep it very simple to focus more on the subject itself. I hope to capture certain features of my surroundings, such as cracked walls or graffiti to show a contrast between the harsh world and young individual.

D A T E  &  T I M I N G S:

I plan to carry out the photo shoot on the 10th of February 2016. As the nights are only just starting to get lighter, I will capture the photographs just before dusk to create a deeper, more dramatic atmosphere within my photographs. For the weather conditions, any early wintry showers soon clearing to leave a dry, bright and breezy day with plenty of sunny spells. For later on in the day, dry, cold and clear skies perfect for my photo shoot and the emotions I am portraying in my photographs. The sun is said to set between 17:00 and 18:00, therefore I will have to make sure I am out the house taking photos beforehand. I would like to explore the location, therefore the photo shoot itself should take no more than an hour.

P R O P S:

To work in the style of both artists more so Mark and link in with the idea of influences, I will use real cigarettes to show how quickly candy sticks can change into the real thing for young individuals. I plan to light the cigarette slightly before the shoot to make it look as if the cigarette is actually lit. I will also dress my model in caps and hoodies inspired by Mark to make the shoot more believable and rough.

I intent to edit my photos after I have taken them, to enhance the colours and depth of each photo to make it more effective and visually interesting. I will also edit some of the photos in greyscale to work effectively in the style of Mann and Mark. I feel as if the greyscale effect will help for focus the attention on the subject of the photo itself and keep the theme running throughout my project.

Whilst searching for a suitable place to set my shoot, I came across a viaduct that I myself used to hang around with my friends. I found that the shoot has been successful in showing influences from others but that the cigarette itself isn’t very obvious within a lot of the photographs, making it less effective as it potentially could be. I find that the surroundings of this shoot really make it, emphasising how young individuals may go out of their way to follow through with these influences away from others, even though their influence came from someone else. I found around the area old bear cans and cigarette ends that helped to further emphasise the idea of influences and bad habits which children and teens are surrounded by. The harsh brick walls link in well with my previous shoot in the style of Parker, showing a development of my ideas being further emphasised by graffiti and railings to show overthrown safety that shouldn’t be associated with children. Even though the use of my male, slightly older model has worked well in showing the diversity and strength of these influences, I believe my photographs would be even more successful if I were to use the same surroundings and theme with my younger models. This would create a controversial effect that I want within my photography.
